NYPD investigating possible hate crime as "Heil Hitler" written on Jackie Robinson statue

The NYPD is investigating a possible hate crime as the words "Heil Hitler" and other racist epithets were written on a statute of baseball great Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese. The words were written in black marker and not spray painted. A manager working for MCU Park noticed the vandalism Wednesday morning. Fortunately, the words were covered with a drape to prevent young children in the area from seeing them.

The NY Daily News interviewed several people who were at the scene as workers began removing the words from the statue; that is often seen as a symbol of racial harmony. Jackie Robinson made history when he became the first black, baseball player to play in the major league.

The crime is being investigated, and police are hoping video, surveillance footage will lead them to a suspect.
