Martinez stated that Arias stabbed Travis Alexander 29 times, slit his throat from ear to ear and shot him in the head. Due to the extreme level of violence displayed in the act, the state of Arizona is seeking the death penalty.

Arias' criminal defense team is led by Kirk Nurmi and Jennifer Willmott. They argued that Jodi Arias did not murder Travis Alexander in a cruel and depraved manner, but rather used necessary violence against Alexander as she was a victim of domestic violence and thought her life was in jeopardy.

The jury has reportedly rendered a unanimous verdict, ruling out the chance of a hung jury. Should they rule Jodi Arias guilty of first-degree murder, they will convene for sentencing as Arias would then face the death penalty.
